Story Time: In a Small, Small Small Pond

Denise Fleming's book gives young readers a frog's-eye view of life in a pond throughout the seasons.
In the Small, Small Pond is a 1994 Caldecott Honor Book.
Illustrations and rhyming text describe the activities of animals living in and near a small pond as spring progresses to autumn.

As a variety of familiar creatures topples into the water, one right after another, each one makes its own characteristic sound, in a playful rhyme that makes a fun-filled guessing game for young children. Children's BOMC. Jr Lib Guild.

Literacy Extenders:
  • Talk to your child about what is happening in each picture? Ask them what different noises that each animal makes. Ask them about the illustrations and see if they notice the progression in the season changing.
  • Get tadpoles and watch as they change. Talk about the life cycle of the frog.
  • Go to a pond or creek area for a scavenger hunt! Life jackets in tow, see how many different things you can find from each of the books
  • Cool off and go swimming! Most kids love water!
