Story Time October 8

Sometimes Ruby needs
just one more minute of sleep,
one more thingy for her hair,
one more push on the swing,
and one more scoop on her cone,
(and one more,  and one more, and one more . . .)
until one more is just
too much.
Maybe it’s time for
just one?
If you know a someone like Ruby,
Just One More will be
just right!

Join a group of fun-loving shapes as they collaborate and create in this picture book from a Caldecott Honoree.

Come along on a creative adventure with a gang of saucy shapes—and a mischievous mouse who wants to play too. Meet circles, rectangles, ovals, arcs, and a triangle and a square as well. Wait till you see what this crowd can make when they’re all working together!

Literacy Extenders:
  • Shapes...Look around your house, outside, in the car! Identify different shapes as you see them. Let your child go into a room at home and make a list of how many different shapes they can find and identify.
  • Play grocery store in your kitchen, let your child shop in the cupboards and if they find an item they want to "buy" ask them what shape it is, if they are correct let them add it to their cart. This is great for imaginary play and shape recognition.
  • After reading just one more ask your child about the little girl in the story when she kept asking for more. Ask them what happened when the little girl had too much. Remember this story when your child is faced with having to make decisions, remind them if they would rather have some or none?
  • Make a picture collage! get out the scissors and glue and cute some shapes for them. Let them create their own picture. First ask them if they can remake the picture of the monkey that was in the second book from today, then ask them to make a monkey a friend from the other left over shapes.
Craft: I is for Ice Cream
  • For this craft you will need a small paper plate, a sheet of brown construction paper, crayons, glue and scissors.
  • Take the sheet of brown paper and cut a large upper case letter I, this will be the cone part of the ice cream cone.
  • Next have your child glue the small plate on top of the letter I. The plate will be the ice cream scoops. let them color different colored scoops, sprinkles, and a cherry.
